How we decide who teaches your child

Anyone can call themselves a tutor. These are the checks that sit between an application and your child.

Read by a person, not a filter

Every application is reviewed by hand. Applications do get turned down — and we do not leave them sitting.

DBS status on every profile

Each profile shows one of three things: verified by us, meaning we have seen the certificate, on file, meaning provided but not yet checked, or not provided. We never claim it for all of them.

Contact stays on the platform

Sessions run in our own video room and messages go through us, so there is a record. Attempts to move a student to a private number or app are blocked automatically.

Recording only with consent

A session is never recorded unless consent has been given, and a named safeguarding lead is responsible for concerns raised. That is Archie, the founder.

How does matching work?
Tell us the subject, level and goal, and we match you with your best-fit vetted tutors in seconds — you'll see their verification up front. No account needed to see your matches.
Are the tutors checked?
Every tutor is hand-vetted — a person reads every application, and we turn down more than one in four. Each tutor's qualifications are set out on their profile, and their DBS status is shown as verified by us, on file, or not provided. We never make a blanket claim; you always see the specific status per tutor.
How much does it cost?
Tutors set their own rate, from £16/hr, and keep 100% of it. You pay that plus one transparent 20% Sessioned service fee, shown before you book. No subscription, no hidden commission. See our full guide to tutoring costs.
Can I try before committing?
Many tutors offer a free intro call, and there's no lock-in — you book by the session. And if your first session isn't the right fit, we'll rematch you and refund it.
Can I message a tutor first?
Yes — you can message any tutor before booking to check they're the right fit for you or your child.
Do I need an account?
Not to get matched — just tell us what you need and we'll show you tutors. You only create an account when you're ready to book.

Session recordings

Some tutors can record a session so your child can rewatch it for revision. Recordings only ever happen with your explicit permission, both people see a clear "recording" indicator throughout, and either side can decline at any time. Recordings are stored securely and deleted after a set period.

Who do you work best with? This is the single most useful field for getting matched to the right families.

Your teaching style — helps families (and our matcher) see how you'd help.

Saying no to the wrong match is professional, not a lost sale. It stops families booking you for something you can't help with — and stops you doing unpaid triage.

We won't guess this one. Left blank, your profile says "not declared" rather than implying an answer — because inventing a capability claim about teaching children with additional needs isn't ours to make. "Not my area" is a perfectly good answer and helps parents find the right person faster.

Two different services, not a ranking. A parent choosing a recent graduate should be choosing that on purpose, not settling for it without knowing.

Shown to students only after they book a session, so you can coordinate easily.

A short, free, no-teaching chat so families can meet you before booking. Great for turning enquiries into bookings. One per student.

When on, students see you're away and can't book new sessions. Your profile stays visible. Turn off when you're back.

Hold ⌘ (or Ctrl) to select more than one. Pick GCSE for Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) — that is how we match Year 7–9 enquiries.

Availability

Times are in UK time (GMT/BST) — the same zone students book in. Each slot is one hour.

Documents

Optional. If you'd like your degree certificate, QTS or teaching qualification on file, you can add it here — it helps when we're checking an application. PDF or a photo, up to 10MB.

Where does this go, who can see it, and when is it deleted?

Where. A private store in the same database as the rest of your account. It isn't on the public web and it has no public address — there is no link that would open it, for anyone, without going through the checks below.

Who. You, and the Sessioned staff who review applications. Nobody else — not students, not other tutors. Each time the file is opened we record who opened it and when, including when it's one of us, so if you ever ask us that question we answer it from the log rather than from memory.

How long. Qualification documents are deleted 12 months after you upload them. If we ever ask you for an identity document, that one is deleted within 30 days. You can delete anything here yourself at any time, and closing your account deletes all of it.

DBS. We don't take copies of DBS certificates. We check the certificate number against the government's Update Service, which is the only check that means anything — please don't send us a photo of yours.

What we do with these, and what the badge means

The check. We look your certificate up on the government’s DBS Update Service, which tells us whether it is still clear. That is a person doing it by hand, so it is not instant.

The badge. Your profile only says “DBS Verified” once that check has actually been done. Until then it says we hold a number we have not checked, which is the truth. Sending these does not change the badge by itself.

Storage. Both values are encrypted the moment they reach us and neither is ever displayed again — not to you, not to students, not in an email. This page can tell you whether we hold them, and that is all it can tell you.

No photos. Please don’t send us a picture of your certificate. A photo proves nothing a number doesn’t, and we would rather not hold one.

Your teaching record

Your sessions, subjects, credentials and any feedback parents have written are yours. Download them whenever you like — no notice, no asking us — and for 12 months after you leave.

The file is signed, so anyone you show it to can confirm it came from us and has not been altered, without contacting us. Parents' names are shortened to a first name and their contact details are never included.

Set when you're contactable. Messages outside your hours are still saved instantly — we just hold the email until your next window, so you're not pinged at all hours. Urgent same-day changes always come straight through.

Two-factor authentication

Adds a six-digit code from an authenticator app on top of your password. It means someone who gets hold of your password still cannot read your students’ messages or details. Use any authenticator app — Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, or the one built into your phone.

There is nothing to set up in advance. You pay when you book a session, and your card details are entered directly into Stripe — they never pass through Sessioned.

Your tutor receives their full rate. The 20% service fee is added on your side at checkout and covers vetting, secure payments, scheduling and support.
