What A-Level chemistry covers
All boards organise the course into three strands:
- Physical chemistry — atomic structure, amount of substance (moles), bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibria and redox, then thermodynamics, rate equations, electrode potentials and acids and bases
- Inorganic chemistry — periodicity, Groups 2 and 7, Period 3, and the transition metals and their reactions
- Organic chemistry — from alkanes, halogenoalkanes and alcohols through to aromatic chemistry, amines, polymers, amino acids and spectroscopy (NMR, mass spectrometry and chromatography)
Practical skills run through the whole course, and every board sets required practicals whose methods and data also appear in the written papers.
